Kyungnam University, Glocal University Preliminary Designee, Launches Full-Scale Global Cooperation System for Hyper-scale Manufacturing AI

Global Cooperation and Technical Support Provided
to Vertical AI Service Specialist in Smart Manufacturing

Kyungnam University’s Gyeongnam Intelligence Innovation Project Group has begun in earnest to establish a global cooperation system for securing and developing smart manufacturing technologies.

On June 25, the project group, together with the Global Joint Research Center for Hyper-scale Manufacturing AI, visited AGCO Fendt, a specialized agricultural machinery company located in Bavaria, Germany, alongside RCK, which is jointly developing technology with the center, Visual Components from Finland, and the local startup Nextstud.io. The purpose of the visit was to observe advanced cases of smart manufacturing implementation.

Kyungnam University, with support from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Korea Industrial Complex Corporation, is currently promoting a project titled “Development and Demonstration of Hyper-scale Manufacturing AI Service Technology Specialized for Manufacturing” with a total budget of 22.7 billion KRW by 2027. This visit was organized to support Nextstud.io, a joint implementing organization for the project, in developing its “LLM-based Vertical AI Service.”

Nextstud.io, a startup specializing in hyper-scale manufacturing AI technology, is developing “process optimization technology optimized for cell-based production systems” using the open-source large language model (LLM) ‘LLaMA’. However, the company had faced difficulties as it had not been able to secure real-world cases of cell-based production system implementation and application, and thus had been limited to developing the technology only in virtual environments.

To address this, Nextstud.io requested support from the Gyeongnam Intelligence Innovation Project Group and the Global Joint Research Center for Hyper-scale Manufacturing AI, both of which are leading manufacturing innovation. The two organizations determined that Nextstud.io’s LLM-based Vertical AI Service would be better suited to the European manufacturing environment than the domestic one, and arranged the visit to AGCO Fendt in Germany through their global research partners, Visual Components of Finland and RCK.

On the day of the visit, AGCO Fendt’s group leader Sebastian Burlefinger and project engineer Norbert Pritzl personally welcomed the delegation and introduced the factory. They provided a detailed explanation, lasting over two hours, about the smart manufacturing technologies applied throughout all processes and the technical factors to consider when introducing cell-based systems.

Yang Jinhong, CEO of Nextstud.io, said, “We were able to receive real-time answers to our questions from AGCO Fendt,” and added, “I am deeply grateful to Kyungnam University and our global cooperation partner Visual Components for providing us with this valuable opportunity to directly gather advanced information that is difficult to obtain domestically.” He continued, “We will continue to propose ongoing support for companies and joint technology development in the future.”

Hong Junghyo, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Chair of the National Project Promotion Committee at Kyungnam University, stated, “The global cooperation system that Kyungnam University has continuously pursued since 2020 is now delivering tangible technological benefits to local companies.”

He went on to say, “We plan to announce the results of the ‘manufacturing-specialized sLLM (specialized large language model)’ currently being developed through our joint hyper-scale manufacturing AI technology development project with Google Cloud at the end of this year,” and emphasized, “Kyungnam University will focus all its capabilities on becoming a global innovative research university that leads the manufacturing AX not only in Gyeongnam but also in the entire Korean manufacturing industry.”
