Gijang County (Governor Jung Jongbok), in collaboration with the Gijang County Urban Management Corporation, has officially launched a suicide prevention project utilizing public restrooms. The strategy aims to expand access to high-risk groups by leveraging public facilities that are closely connected to daily life, and to promote a culture of respect for life.
According to the county on June 16, the project was carried out from June 9 to June 13 with the goal of reducing the local suicide rate and strengthening early intervention. The county attached suicide prevention stickers in 36 public restrooms located in the five towns and townships of Gijang-eup, Jeonggwan-eup, and others.
The stickers display the 24-hour suicide prevention hotline number 109, as well as contact information for mental health support organizations such as the Gijang County Mental Health Welfare Center. They are designed to enable immediate counseling and rescue requests in the event of a crisis.
Separately from this project, Gijang County held a working-level meeting with the Gijang County Mental Health Welfare Center, the Gijang County Urban Management Corporation, and the Gijang Fire Station to discuss ways to improve suicide risk environments in the region. Based on the tasks identified at the meeting, the county plans to sequentially implement measures such as the identification of high-risk groups, the advancement of crisis intervention systems, and the expansion of psychological and emotional support programs.
Governor Jung Jongbok stated, "It is important to establish a system that can detect and respond to crisis signals close to everyday life," and added, "We will build a dense safety net to protect the lives of Gijang County residents through cooperation with related organizations."
For suicide prevention and mental health promotion, Gijang County is continuously operating psychological counseling, case management for high-risk groups, and community linkage activities, centered on the Gijang County Mental Health Welfare Center.
If you are experiencing depression or psychological crisis, you can receive professional help through the 24-hour suicide prevention hotline number 109, the SNS counseling service 'Madeulran', or the Gijang County Mental Health Welfare Center.
