On June 14, Jeonnam Province announced that a total of eight districts had been selected in the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs' 2025 General Rural Agricultural and Fishing Village Development Project and Rural Space Improvement Project, securing 34.2 billion won in national funding.
This is expected to mark a significant turning point in improving living conditions in underdeveloped rural areas and enhancing the quality of life for residents.
For the General Rural Agricultural and Fishing Village Development Project, five districts across three counties?Muan, Hampyeong, and Yeonggwang?were selected, securing 21.7 billion won in national funding. The plan is to establish a foundation for regional self-sufficiency by expanding living, welfare, and cultural infrastructure and implementing community-led programs.
In Illo-eup, Muan, the "Rural Central Area Revitalization Project" will strengthen living service functions in the town center and expand connections with surrounding villages by establishing welfare and cultural facilities as well as community spaces.
Haeje-myeon in Muan and Eomdam-myeon in Hampyeong will implement the "Basic Living Base Project" to provide hub spaces where residents can conveniently access welfare, cultural, and healthcare services. Daedong-myeon in Hampyeong and Myoryang-myeon in Yeonggwang will offer customized programs tailored to local needs.
For the Rural Space Improvement Project, three districts were selected, securing 12.5 billion won in national funding. The core of the project is to remove hazardous facilities and elements of unplanned development within rural villages and to convert the improved spaces into resident-centered living areas.
In the Seongsan district of Yeongam, a waste processing plant will be demolished, and facilities such as agricultural training centers and local specialty product processing plants will be established to increase residents' income and enhance agricultural competitiveness.
In the Palgeum district of Shinan, infrastructure such as canola oil processing facilities and rural exchange experience complexes will be expanded to attract young people and new agricultural populations.
In the Daesan district of Naju, seven old livestock barns will be demolished and transformed into eco-friendly spaces.
Kim Hyunmi, Director of Agricultural Policy at Jeonnam Province, stated, "With this selection, rural areas will transform into livable, community-centered spaces. Through continuous improvement and regeneration projects, we will ensure that Jeonnam's rural areas once again become vibrant centers where people gather and the quality of life is enhanced."
