Establishment and Operation of the Maritime Economic Security Support Group and the Maritime and Fisheries Energy Transition Support Group
Four Major Policy Support Groups for Customized Strategies and Policy Support under the New Administration
The Korea Maritime Institute (KMI) has established two dedicated research organizations, the Maritime Economic Security Support Group and the Maritime and Fisheries Energy Transition Support Group, to respond to changes in the international maritime order and the trend toward carbon neutrality, in line with the new government's policy agenda.
Previously, KMI launched the Arctic Route Support Group and the Maritime and Fisheries AI Transition Support Group. With this latest organizational restructuring, KMI is taking proactive measures to respond to rapidly changing global circumstances and is accelerating efforts to enhance policy implementation.
The newly established Maritime Economic Security Support Group is an expanded and reorganized version of the previous Maritime Security Policy Support Group.
This move aims to strengthen response capabilities, as recent changes in the trade environment have brought economic, trade, and logistics security to the forefront as complex issues involving maritime sovereignty and economic diplomacy. The support group is organized around the Maritime Security Strategy Research Office and will conduct multifaceted research, including data analysis, legislative review, and trend diagnosis to support policy decision-making.
The Maritime and Fisheries Energy Transition Support Group, newly established amid the climate crisis and the push for carbon neutrality policies, is responsible for leading the eco-friendly transition and energy strategy development in the maritime and fisheries sector.
The support group will design a mid- to long-term roadmap for achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, gather on-site feedback through regular seminars and workshops, and review the enactment and revision of relevant laws and regulations.
With these changes, KMI has completed its "four major policy support group system," covering key issues such as the Arctic route, AI digital transition, economic security, and energy transition.
KMI President Cho Jeonghee emphasized, "This four-group system represents a strategic shift that goes beyond simple research to enhance the effectiveness of national maritime strategy formulation. We will swiftly prepare practical alternatives that reflect voices from the policy field and make substantial contributions to realizing Korea as a global maritime powerhouse."
