Turning SK Hynix HBM Semiconductor Chips into Snack Chips
Seven Eleven Collaboration 'Honey Banana Flavor HBM Chips' Gains Popularity
The "Honey Banana Flavor HBM Chip" snack, launched by Seven Eleven in collaboration with SK Hynix, has surpassed cumulative sales of 200,000 units just three weeks after its release. This unique collaboration, which reimagined high-bandwidth memory (HBM)-a core technology in the age of artificial intelligence (AI)-as a snack, is being praised for its simultaneous success in both sales and public attention.
"Edible Semiconductor Chips Are a Hit"...SK Hynix Snack Becomes a Sensation
On November 26, Seven Eleven introduced a snack chip called "Honey Banana Flavor (Honey Banana Mat)," using a play on words with the "HBM" semiconductor chip that SK Hynix first developed globally in 2013. The chips were designed in a square shape to evoke the image of HBM semiconductors, and the packaging features SK Hynix's semiconductor humanoid character and chip patterns.
The snack quickly became a hot topic due to this unconventional collaboration. Online, reactions included comments such as, "A semiconductor chip snack concept-how fun," "What is the yield rate for these chips?" and "Truly fitting for the country of HBM," reflecting the enthusiastic response.
Riding this wave of attention, the initial batch of 100,000 units sold out within nine days of launch, and the second batch of 100,000 units also sold out completely. Currently, the snack ranks among the top three in the Seven Eleven snack category. Additionally, last week (December 15-21), searches for the snack on the official Seven Eleven application "Inventory Finder" increased by 50% compared to the first week of launch, and related posts on the official social media accounts of Seven Eleven and SK Hynix have accumulated over 3 million views.
Especially Popular Near SK Hynix Offices...Nationwide No.1 Store 'Icheon SK Branch' Begins Delivery
In particular, stores located near major SK Hynix offices have seen especially strong demand. The top-selling store for HBM chips nationwide is the "Seven Eleven Icheon SK Branch," located in the SK Hynix employee housing village about 500 meters from the SK Hynix Icheon office. According to Seven Eleven, this store set up a dedicated display for HBM chips and even delivered boxes directly to the Icheon office.
No Seongmin, the owner of the Seven Eleven Icheon SK Branch, said, "Employees usually visit during lunch or dinner hours, sometimes buying several packs to participate in prize events, and staff from HBM-related departments are curious and purchase them as well. Although SK Hynix does not typically handle consumer goods, the release of a related product like this has sparked significant interest among employees."
