People Power Party’s Junbae Lee of Sejong: “Nullifying Anti-Impeachment Party Stance Is an Attempt to Erase the Past”

Concerns Over Undermining Trust in the Party's Identity and Judgment

People Power Party’s Junbae Lee of Sejong: “Nullifying Anti-Impeachment Party Stance Is an Attempt to Erase the Past” Junbae Lee, Chairman of the Sejong City Branch of the People Power Party

Junbae Lee, Chairman of the Sejong City Branch of the People Power Party, has expressed his views regarding Kim Yongtae, the emergency committee chairman of the People Power Party, who proposed the "nullification of the party’s official stance against the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk-yeol."

On June 11, Lee wrote on his social media Facebook page, "Nullifying a history that has already passed does not heal conflicts."

He stated, "At that time, the party's official stance against impeachment was a carefully made decision based on the principles of the Constitution and rule of law, as well as the identity of the conservative bloc. This was not merely a political judgment, but a collective choice carrying historical responsibility. Nullifying such a decision could be seen not as a simple patch, but as an attempt to erase the past, which poses a significant risk of undermining trust in the party’s identity and judgment."

He further emphasized, "Conflicts do not disappear simply by being ignored. Just because muddy water settles at the bottom over time does not mean it becomes clear water. Likewise, peace that is forcibly covered up remains in a precarious state that can be shaken at any time."

Lee continued, "What we need now is not the deletion of the party’s official stance, but a sober evaluation of why such a decision was made at the time and what the consequences were. I believe that both those who supported and those who opposed the impeachment made their judgments out of sincerity and patriotism. Therefore, we should record that decision as it was, share the lessons it left behind, and use it as a mirror for the future."

He also pointed out that nullifying the party’s official stance could undermine the principles of conservative politics. It could weaken the principles and consistency that the party has maintained, further destabilize the party’s internal order, and, if the party wishes to criticize the rule of law violations by the Lee Jaemyung administration, it must uphold its own principles. He explained that it is contradictory to speak of future legitimacy while denying the party’s past decisions.

He particularly emphasized that both the positions supporting and opposing impeachment were formed through democratic procedures within the party and are historical facts that cannot be easily erased. If the party’s official stance is nullified, it will be difficult for any future party position to earn the trust of its members.

Lee stressed, "True integration only begins when we respect each other's judgments and experiences. I am convinced that the only way for the party to become a trusted party by its members and the public is to oppose the proposal to nullify the anti-impeachment party position, honestly record and soberly reflect on the history and decisions of conservatism, and thereby lay the foundation for genuine integration for the party’s future."
