Kim Yongtae: "True Unity Lies Beyond the River of Impeachment"
Afternoon General Assembly Canceled Amid Concerns of Internal Conflict
As the People Power Party canceled its scheduled general assembly of lawmakers on the afternoon of June 11, Emergency Response Committee Chair Kim Yongtae once again appealed for the invalidation of the party's official stance opposing impeachment.
On this day, Chair Kim explained the purpose of his proposal to invalidate the anti-impeachment party line through a message titled "A Letter to Lawmakers."
He stated, "Under the principle of 'deciding on impeachment based on the official results of investigations,' the party adopted an official stance opposing the two impeachment bills proposed by the Democratic Party. Ultimately, on April 4, the Constitutional Court upheld the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol with a unanimous decision by all justices, and the People Power Party was defeated in the early presidential election."
He continued, "The reason for pursuing the invalidation of the anti-impeachment party line is because, after two rounds of impeachment, the conservative party has not been able to escape from severe conflict and deep resentment. The recent presidential primary was also a battle of emotions between pro- and anti-impeachment factions."
Chair Kim emphasized, "Unless this issue is resolved, the next party convention, which conservatives must inevitably face, will also become a battleground of heated debate between pro- and anti-impeachment sides. There can be no coexistence or unity for conservatives who cannot cross the river of impeachment, and unless we turn confrontation into creative energy, there is no future for us."
He added, "I believe that both the citizens who supported impeachment and those who opposed it acted with sincerity and patriotism. However, decisions by the Constitutional Court and Supreme Court, as well as other rulings by the national judiciary, serve as irreversible grounds for determining or revising the official positions of a party in a liberal democracy."
Chair Kim further stated, "If the People Power Party unites its will and crosses the river of impeachment, the upcoming party convention will mark the beginning of the conservative camp's reconstruction as a strong alternative to the Lee Jaemyung administration, which is undermining the rule of law. I earnestly ask for your support for the invalidation of the anti-impeachment party line so that we may achieve true unity within the party by crossing the river of impeachment."
Meanwhile, the People Power Party decided not to hold the general assembly of lawmakers that was scheduled for 2 p.m. on this day. Floor Leader Kwon Seongdong informed lawmakers in a notice that "today's general assembly has been inevitably canceled, considering that the party held a condemnation rally this morning in response to President Lee Jaemyung's trial postponement, and that it is necessary to focus the party's efforts and messaging on this matter." He also explained that continuing with the assembly could have led to concerns about internal conflict and division within the party.
