Breakdown of Wage and Collective Bargaining Talks... Full-Day Strike on the 25th
"Kakao Union's First-Ever Strike... For Fair Compensation"
Crew Union, the labor union representing the Kakao community, will go on strike for the first time since its establishment. This strike is being staged due to the breakdown of wage and collective bargaining agreement (CBA) negotiations at Kakao Mobility.
On June 10, the union issued a statement saying, "The growth of Kakao Mobility was made possible by the dedication and efforts of the crew," and added, "Despite strong performance, management has put forward a unilateral and insufficient compensation plan, ignoring workers' legitimate rights and achievements." The union announced its intention to begin the strike.
The strike will begin with a two-hour partial walkout on June 11. This will be followed by a four-hour partial strike and a large-scale rally on June 18, and then a full-day strike on June 25, with each stage escalating in intensity. In addition, the union plans to hold relay rallies every Wednesday.
The union emphasized that this strike is symbolic, as it marks the first collective action since the founding of the Kakao labor union.
The first strike by the Kakao labor union will begin in solidarity with the Naver labor union. At Naver, the union is protesting the recent reinstatement of Choi Inhyuk, the former Chief Operating Officer (COO) who was identified as responsible for a workplace harassment incident, as head of the Tech Business division.
The union explained that this strike will also be joined by the industry-wide solidarity of the Korean Federation of Chemical, Textile, and Food Industry Workers' Unions (KCTF).
Seo Seungwook, head of the Crew Union branch, stated, "The first strike by the Kakao labor union is the first step toward building a Kakao community where every crew member is respected and fair compensation is realized," and added, "We will fight to the end to create a Kakao community where people want to work together and to protect the rights and value of labor for all crew members."
Regarding the union's decision to strike, Kakao Mobility said, "We are making sincere efforts to find common ground with the union," and added, "We will do our best to ensure there is no inconvenience to service users."
