Hotel Suspects Cockroach Entered Through Garbage Area Pipes
Authorities Launch Investigation
A cockroach was found inside a dim sum steamer at the breakfast buffet of a hotel in Changsha, Hunan Province, China, causing shock. The incident has sparked controversy over hotel hygiene issues.
According to local media outlets such as Daewan News on June 7 (local time), a tourist surnamed Zhong, who was staying at the Juzi Hotel near Huangxing Road in Changsha, reported discovering a cockroach in a dim sum steamer while using the hotel's breakfast buffet.
In an interview with the media, Zhong said, "The hotel was large and the room facilities were decent. However, while eating breakfast, I picked up a dim sum from the steamer and noticed a black object on top of it, which turned out to be a cockroach. I was so disgusted that I immediately informed a staff member, and the staff removed the entire steamer."

The hotel initially offered Zhong compensation of 200 yuan (about 37,000 won), but Zhong reportedly refused the offer.
Zhang, the manager of the Juzi Hotel branch, told local media, "We deeply regret that such an incident occurred." He explained, "After reviewing surveillance footage from the cooking process, there was no cockroach present, and it is possible that the cockroach entered the steamer through pipes connected to a nearby garbage area." He added, "The hotel conducts pest control and disinfection twice a month, and there have been no similar cases so far. We will strive for an amicable resolution with the customer."
Juzi Hotel is a subsidiary of Huazhu Group, a major hotel chain in China. In connection with this incident, the local Market Supervision and Administration Bureau has launched an official investigation.
