Held at Eight Markets Including the Hwaryangyeonhwa Beer Festival
Gwangjin District in Seoul will host a ‘Relay Grand Festival’ at eight traditional markets in the district from this month through October. The purpose of the festival is to invigorate traditional markets and boost sales by offering specially planned events and various activities that highlight the unique characteristics of each market.

The festival will kick off at Hwayang Jeil Market on June 10 and continue sequentially until October 24 at Junggok Jeil Market. Each market will feature a range of customer appreciation events, including prize draws, coupon and instant lottery giveaways, and Onnuri Payback promotions. There will also be beer and Makgeolli-themed performances, food booths, hands-on activities, and other attractions for visitors to enjoy.
Each market will also present its own uniquely planned festival. Hwayang Jeil Market will host the ‘Hwaryangyeonhwa Beer Festival,’ offering cultural events with a youthful vibe, beer and highball booths, a nighttime food culture fair, and collaborative food events among vendors. These diverse programs will take place three times in June, August, and September.
On June 12, Myeongok Market will hold ‘Have a Drink with Myeongok!!’, featuring tastings of Makgeolli from various provinces, a music concert, and an instant photo event. On June 17, Jayang Traditional Market will host the ‘Beer Night! Festival,’ a customer singing contest, and an Onnuri Payback event.
In addition, the district is working to create a pleasant and safe environment by designating ‘Traditional Market Clean-Out Days’ at each market, along with water cleaning, disinfection, and facility inspections. Myeongok Market has been selected for a Ministry of SMEs and Startups contest and will hold the ‘Companion Sale Festival’ from June 9 to 11. Junggok Jeil Market and Norunsan Alley Market are preparing collaborative events with local organizations as part of Seoul City’s ‘Our Neighborhood Market Outing’ project.
On June 11, Junggok Jeil Market will host a snack booth for about 400 national merit recipients and senior citizens from senior centers. On June 23 and 24, Norunsan Alley Market will organize a shopping experience event for children from local children’s centers.
Kim Kyungho, Mayor of Gwangjin District, stated, “Since 2023, the traditional market festival has grown beyond a simple event to become a cultural space that revitalizes the local economy and brings together residents and merchants. We will continue to provide support so that traditional markets can transform into everyday cultural spaces where young people and families can enjoy themselves together.”
