The Criminal Investigation Headquarters of the National Police Agency announced on June 5 that a total of 2,565 individuals have been identified as violators of election laws related to the 21st presidential election. Of these, 8 have been detained, 88 have been referred for prosecution, 44 cases have been closed without referral, and 2,433 individuals are still under investigation.
By type of offense, 1,907 individuals (74.3%) were involved in the destruction of banners and posters, 213 (8.3%) violated various regulatory restrictions, 189 (7.4%) were charged with spreading false information, and 137 (5.3%) were involved in election-related violence.
Compared to the 20th presidential election, based on the election day, the number of individuals under investigation increased by 85.5%. This significant rise is attributed to a surge in crimes such as the destruction of banners and posters and election violence, which have increased sharply due to social unrest and heightened factional conflict following the declaration of martial law on December 3 of last year.
A police official stated, "Considering that the statute of limitations for election crimes is only six months after election day, we will concentrate investigative resources on election-related cases for four months, and we plan to conduct swift and thorough investigations by exchanging and presenting opinions with the prosecution."
