On June 4, Jeollanam-do Governor Kim Youngrok held an executive meeting related to the launch of the new government and instructed officials to respond promptly to the adoption of national policy tasks and activities to secure next year's national budget. In response, Jeollanam-do has formed a "New Government National Policy Task Force" led by Governor Kim, which will work together with cities and counties to discuss detailed plans for campaign pledges. The team also plans to prepare for the new government's national policy tasks and the second supplementary budget, which is expected to be around 30 trillion won.
The main campaign pledges for Jeollanam-do include: basic income; basic allowances for farmers and fishermen; establishing Jeollanam-do as a hub for renewable energy; creating a cluster for future advanced strategic industries; establishing a national medical school in Jeollanam-do; fostering a leading Northeast Asian gateway airport and expanding the ultra-wide transportation network; securing global competitiveness in future agriculture, fisheries, and livestock industries; and developing the southern coast as a global hub for marine, tourism, and culture.
During the executive meeting, Governor Kim stated, "The people of Jeollanam-do played a significant role in the election with a high voter turnout of 83.6% and the highest approval rating of 85.87%. Now, the true journey of the Republic of Korea has begun, and the future development of Jeollanam-do is within sight."
He continued, "President Lee Jaemyung, who will begin his duties immediately, emphasized during his candidacy that he would dedicate himself to revitalizing the people's economy. The government is expected to pursue a second supplementary budget for this purpose. In order to revitalize the economy for ordinary citizens and people's livelihoods, a supplementary budget of 30 trillion won is deemed necessary, and the province must thoroughly prepare for this as well."
In particular, he noted, "In the field of renewable energy, the Moon Jaein administration laid the foundation for progress, but the previous government focused on nuclear power, resulting in three years of stagnation. I believe the new government will accelerate progress again. As 'energy highway' and 'energy basic income' were mentioned several times as presidential campaign pledges, we must prepare well to achieve significant results in Jeollanam-do."
Additionally, he emphasized the following: accelerating the implementation of Jeonnam-style basic income in line with the new government's direction; proposing additional government support for Jeollanam-do's basic allowance for farmers and fishermen; establishing a national medical school by linking the integration of Mokpo National University and Suncheon National University as a model case in response to the campaign pledge for 10 key national universities; and promoting the enactment of a special law for the southern coast and the establishment of the Southern Coast Comprehensive Development Agency in Jeollanam-do to drive the development of the southern coast as a global hub for marine, tourism, and culture.
Furthermore, as the new government started its administration without a transition committee, Jeollanam-do quickly convened the first meeting of the New Government National Policy Task Force on this day to propose projects for inclusion in national policy tasks and to begin identifying detailed projects for regional campaign pledges in Jeollanam-do.
The task force consists of five policy divisions: new growth engines, core SOC, future agriculture and fisheries, tourism/culture/leisure, and population/welfare. Fifteen departments and bureaus, as well as 22 cities and counties, are participating.
Jeollanam-do plans to actively identify and propose key issues essential for the region's future development to be included in the new government's national policy tasks. In addition, the province will work together with cities and counties to identify detailed projects for the seven major regional pledges made by President Lee Jaemyung during the presidential campaign and submit proposals to relevant government ministries and national policy task-setting agencies.
