Transformed into a Women’s Safety Zone
On June 4, Deoksan-dong in Jinhae-gu, Changwon Special City, Gyeongnam Province announced the successful completion of the LED mural installation for the Women’s Safety Street within the aging commercial area of Deoksan-dong.
LED Mural Installation for Women’s Safety Street in the Aging Commercial Area of Deoksan-dong, Jinhae-gu.
This area is a commercial district densely packed with various restaurants and other businesses. In particular, it is home to Jinhae Gunhangju, a traditional liquor manufacturing facility established in 1974 with a 50-year history, which attracts many visitors from outside the area. However, there have been frequent complaints about the streets being dark and inconvenient after business hours.
In response, Deoksan-dong applied for the Changwon City Women’s Safety Street Project in May to transform the old and dark streets into a safe zone, which led to the start of the mural installation project.
For about a month, the Deoksan-dong Residents’ Association actively participated in the project, from selecting the project site and mural designs to gathering feedback from local merchants, which helped ensure the project was completed in a short period of time.
As a result, a 50-meter section of old walls within the commercial area was transformed with murals depicting cherry blossoms?a symbol of Jinhae?and traditional local liquor-making methods. LED lighting was also installed for nighttime illumination, turning the street into a much brighter and more welcoming place.
Kim Hyejeong, head of Deoksan-dong, stated, "We expect that this project will not only improve the nighttime cityscape but also contribute to expanding safe pedestrian spaces. We will continue to do our best to make our neighborhood a place where residents can live with peace of mind."
