Crimes Surge Compared to the Past
Banner and Poster Vandalism Triples
The National Police Agency announced on June 2 that it had cracked down on 2,100 individuals in connection with illegal activities related to the 21st presidential election, among whom 8 were arrested and 70 were referred for prosecution.
Looking at the five major election crimes, 332 individuals were apprehended. Specifically, 13 were involved in bribery, 168 in spreading false information, 29 in public officials' involvement in the election, 110 in election-related violence, and 2 in illegal mobilization of organizations.
There were 1,619 cases of banner and poster vandalism, with 1 person arrested. In relation to deepfake election crimes, 30 individuals have been identified and are under investigation. For acts of violence or disorder inside and outside early voting stations, 58 individuals were apprehended and 2 were arrested.
A police official stated, "Compared to past presidential elections, a significantly higher number of illegal activities have been confirmed. Election-related violence has increased by 2.2 times, and banner and poster vandalism has surged by 3 times." The official added that the police will respond strictly, including making arrests and conducting investigations for serious illegal acts.
