On May 30, Hongseong County in Chungnam announced that 35.5 million juvenile shrimp were released into the coastal waters of Cheonsuman at Sokdong Port in Seobu-myeon, with county officials and local fishermen participating in the event.
The county considers the aquaculture seed collection and release project to be a program that can make a substantial contribution to fishermen's income by releasing high-quality seeds suited to local coastal conditions, based on scientific pre- and post-impact assessments. For this reason, the project has been carried out continuously every year.
According to the 2024 Chungnam Province aquaculture seed release effectiveness survey, the juvenile shrimp released in 2024 showed a survival rate of 50.5% and a bycatch rate of 84.1%, indicating a significant impact from the seed release program.
The county expects that shrimp production will increase significantly compared to previous years during the peak autumn season, and anticipates that this will greatly contribute to improving fishermen's incomes.
Lee Hwaseon, head of the county's Maritime and Fisheries Division, said, "By releasing juvenile shrimp, which are a representative seafood product of Hongseong County, we aim to strengthen the image of our local specialty. We also expect this to attract tourists in connection with the autumn festival and help revitalize the local economy."
