An election official was apprehended by police at an early voting station in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, for casting a proxy vote using her husband's identification card.
The Suseo Police Station in Seoul announced on the 30th that it had arrested election official A on charges of violating Article 248 of the Public Official Election Act (fraudulent voting) and is currently investigating the case.
A is accused of casting a proxy vote on the 29th using her husband's identification card and then attempting to vote with her own identification card. It has been determined that A, who was employed as a contract public official and was responsible for verifying voters' identities, was able to facilitate the proxy voting due to her role.
According to Article 248 of the Public Official Election Act, anyone who attempts to vote by impersonating another person's name or by forging or altering identification documents is subject to imprisonment for up to five years or a fine of up to 10 million won.
In the case of members or employees of the National Election Commission, or public officials involved in election affairs (including voting officials, early voting officials, and ballot counting officials), the penalty increases to imprisonment for up to seven years.
