Electric Scooters and Motorcycles Also Targeted
A Call for Caution After a Series of Fatal Accidents
The Gwangju Police Agency and the Gwangju Autonomous Police Committee will launch a month-long intensive crackdown on traffic law violations throughout June.
The Gwangju Police Agency and the Gwangju Autonomous Police Committee announced on May 30 that they will conduct a rigorous crackdown on traffic law violations from June 2 to June 30.
This measure comes in response to a recent series of fatal accidents caused by traffic law violations in the Gwangju area. In Gwangju, there have been three consecutive fatal accidents caused by traffic violations in recent days.
The police will designate traffic accident-prone areas and locations near busy districts for each police station, and will use mobile enforcement cameras and camcorders to frequently change enforcement locations, focusing on major violations such as speeding, running red lights, and crossing the center line.
In particular, enforcement will be strengthened against violations involving personal mobility devices (PMs), such as electric scooters, and motorcycles, whose use increases during the summer. The crackdown will target violations such as failure to wear a helmet, drunk driving, and carrying more than one passenger.
A police official stated, "We are strengthening enforcement to eradicate traffic law violations such as speeding, running red lights, and crossing the center line, which are the main causes of accidents," and added, "We hope that all drivers will comply with traffic laws so that we can create a safer traffic culture in Gwangju together."
