Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone Authority Presents Five Key Strategic Directions for BJFEZ... "Aiming for a Global Economic Special Zone"

Final Report Meeting of the Research Project
Full-Scale Efforts to Reflect in National Policy Agenda

The Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone Authority has finalized five key strategic tasks to transform itself into an economic special zone with global competitiveness. The plan includes advanced business initiatives such as an integrated operational model encompassing ports, airports, and industrial complexes, as well as future-oriented logistics infrastructure.

The Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone Authority (Commissioner Park Sungho) announced on May 28 that it held the final report meeting for the "Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone (BJFEZ) Strategic Task Discovery Research Project" in the authority’s main conference room on May 27, sharing the results of a month-long research project.

Fifteen people attended the meeting, including Commissioner Park Sungho, department heads, and research staff.

The five major strategic tasks identified in this research are: ▲Establishing a global standard economic special zone model ▲Creating an unmanned eco-friendly logistics skyway ▲Establishing a future convergence support center ▲Building a shipbuilding MRO cluster ▲Developing a global marine digital demonstration city.

One of the core tasks, the "global standard economic special zone," aims to integrate the dual structure of existing free trade zones and free economic zones to create a unified support system for foreign investors. This is based on the institutional success model of the Dubai special zone and includes features such as a regulation-free sandbox, digital visas, and integrated investor-centered services.

Additionally, to strengthen connections between ports, airports, and industrial complexes, the plan proposes the creation of an AI-based "unmanned eco-friendly logistics skyway" utilizing electric unmanned pods. This seeks to improve logistics efficiency while simultaneously pursuing the goal of building carbon-neutral infrastructure.

Other tasks include establishing a "future convergence support center" to support foreign investors and promote corporate occupancy, creating a "shipbuilding MRO cluster" to help small and medium-sized enterprises transition their business sectors, and developing a "marine digital demonstration city" to test advanced technologies such as autonomous vessels and marine robots.

Commissioner Park Sungho stated, "The strategic tasks derived by reflecting the location and functions of BJFEZ will serve as practical alternatives to drive regional development," and added, "We will expedite policy implementation so that these can be incorporated as national agenda items through consultation with the central government."
