Comfortable Coexistence for Humans and Robots... Government Advances Building Technologies

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on May 28 that it has launched a project to develop core technologies for the design, construction, operation, and management of robot-friendly buildings by 2028.

A robot-friendly building refers to a space where humans and robots can coexist safely and comfortably. The Smart Plus Building Alliance, which includes the government, industry, and academia, is working to advance building-related technologies in response to technological changes, and has selected robotics as its first key project.

The goal of this project is to develop technologies for the design and construction of robot-friendly buildings, as well as systems to support multiple and diverse robots, and technologies for building operation and management. The project also aims to equip buildings with indoor spatial maps to allow robots to navigate, and to develop a control platform. There are also plans to conduct demonstrations in actual buildings and to promote the establishment of standards and certification systems. The candidate sites for demonstration are Keimyung University Dongsan Medical Center, Kyung Hee University Hospital at Gangdong, and Pohang Terminal.

Moon Seokjun, Director of the Architectural Policy Division at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, stated, "The digital transformation is accelerating due to the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution, and buildings are becoming a collective embodiment of these technological changes. We will accelerate the development of technologies to make buildings?where people spend 20 hours a day?smarter and more convenient."
