Three universities in the Busan region have achieved the milestone of being preliminarily selected for the Ministry of Education's Glocal University 30 project.
On May 27, the Busan Metropolitan Government announced that in the first-stage preliminary selection review for the Ministry of Education's '2025 Glocal University 30' project, Kyungsung University and Busan University of Foreign Studies were chosen with independent models, while the integrated model proposed by Korea Maritime and Ocean University and Mokpo National Maritime University was also selected.
A total of 81 universities nationwide submitted 55 applications for this call, with 12 universities in Busan submitting 11 applications. Of these, after in-person evaluations and written inquiries, 18 applications from across the country received preliminary selection.
The MEGA-centered ultra-realistic campus and industry-academia convergence-based K-Culture leading university model proposed by Kyungsung University.
Kyungsung University, which was preliminarily selected, will transform into a MEGA (Media/Movie, Entertainment, Gala/MICE, Arts)-centered ultra-realistic convergence campus encompassing the cultural content industry, including film, performance, and exhibition sectors.
Aiming to become a leading K-Culture university, the school plans to implement a non-departmental, non-year-based education system, establish a creativity-centered MEGA Lab, set up the K-MEGA Production, and create the Busan Ocean Cinema Theme Street.
Busan University of Foreign Studies will leverage its capabilities in over 50 foreign languages to build an ultra-wide-area global education hub integrated with artificial intelligence (AI). The university envisions presenting a global innovation university model through the establishment of a multilingual data center, the development of foreign language-based customized solutions for local industries, generation-coexistence-oriented AgeTech education, and support for international standardization.
Korea Maritime and Ocean University and Mokpo National Maritime University have put forward the integrated model 'Great Ocean-Korea (GO-K)' as their vision. The two universities plan to complete their integration by 2027 and pursue specialization in AI and smart port logistics (Busan) and eco-friendly, safety, and maritime officer training (Mokpo), respectively. The plan also includes establishing an early employment system through high school-university-industry linkage, operating a test-bed campus, and running a joint graduate school.
The Busan Metropolitan Government explained that from the preliminary selection stage, it has established a support system linking local government, universities, and industry, and has continuously held workshops, expert consultations, and joint strategic planning to help each university formulate its implementation plans.
Park Heongjoon, Mayor of Busan, emphasized, "This year marks the first year of university innovation led by the region," and added, "We will provide full support so that Glocal Universities can become a new model for mutual growth between the region and universities."
