First-Ever Citizen Participation Event by the Council
Diverse Programs Including Legislative Conference and Special Lecture on the Constitution
The Gwangju City Council (Chairperson Shin Sujeong) announced on May 22 that, in celebration of the 60th Citizens' Day, it has been holding a variety of legislative events over a four-day period starting from May 21. These events aim to strengthen communication with citizens and widely promote the role of the council.
On May 24, the main event day for Citizens' Day, a "citizen participation promotional booth" will be set up and operated at the outdoor plaza of the city council. Council members will actively participate as "one-day council promotion guides," welcoming citizens and introducing council activities in a friendly manner. Through various experiential programs such as a plenary chamber model photo zone, a three-gavel-strike experience, a citizen opinion board, an SNS follow event, and a prize roulette, the council plans to vividly showcase its legislative activities.
Inside and outside the booth, displays will feature the current status of the 9th council's latter half, major activity photos by standing committees, and promotional videos, providing an intuitive introduction to the council's functions and roles. The plenary chamber will also be open to the general public, and programs for guided tours and legislative procedure experiences will be offered.
In particular, at 2 p.m. on May 24, the Uijeong Conference (Citizens Take Center Stage! Shaping Gwangju's Future Together) will be held in the council's Special Committee on Budget and Accounts meeting room. The conference, under the theme "Local Future Industries, Nurtured by Local Residents," will discuss future strategies for Gwangju, including the revitalization of nighttime tourism, and aims to build consensus on policy directions.
On May 21, a special lecture hosted by the "Gwangju City Law Ordinance Reading Group" was held in the council's main conference room. Lee Kyungjoo, a professor at Inha University Law School, delivered a lecture on "Reading the 2024Hun-Na8 Case," providing insights into constitutional precedents from the perspective of local legislatures.
Chairperson Shin Sujeong stated, "For Citizens' Day, the city council has prepared council programs to communicate with citizens for the first time. We plan to make this an event where citizens can understand the value and role of the council and where we listen attentively to the vivid voices of citizens regarding their expectations for the council."
