The carcass of an Amur tiger (Siberian tiger), an internationally endangered species, was discovered in the sea near Vladivostok in eastern Russia, prompting authorities to investigate the circumstances of the incident.

According to Russian local media outlet RIA Novosti, on May 18, a video showing a tiger carcass floating in the sea spread on social networking services (SNS) such as Telegram. The video was reportedly filmed by fishermen in Yemarman, near Vladivostok.


In connection with this, the Primorsky Krai Department of Natural Resources stated, "Currently, officials from the wildlife protection agency are at the scene, verifying relevant information and conducting recovery operations for the carcass." The department added, "We plan to recover the carcass and conduct an expert examination to determine the exact cause of death."


The Primorsky Krai Prosecutor's Office also announced, "A preliminary investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances of the incident," and added, "The investigation procedures are being carried out under the direction of the prosecutor's office."


The Amur tiger is a carnivorous animal considered an endangered species. In 2008, it was listed as 'Endangered,' the fourth highest risk category, on both the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List and Russia's Red List.


Currently, the species is distributed across four regions in Russia: Primorsky Krai, Khabarovsk Krai, Amur Oblast, and the Jewish Autonomous Region, with an estimated population of 750 individuals.
