Establishing an Institutional Foundation to Ensure the Safety of Elderly Agricultural Workers
The Gumi City Council in North Gyeongsang Province has established an institutional foundation to systematically protect the safety of agricultural workers.
At the 287th extraordinary session’s second plenary meeting held recently, the Gumi City Council passed, as originally proposed, the ordinance on the prevention and support of agricultural work safety accidents in Gumi City. This ordinance was initiated by Councilor Shin Yongha (Democratic Party of Korea, Sandong-eup, Haepyeong, Jangcheon-myeon) and co-sponsored by Councilor Yang Jino (People Power Party, Seonsan, Mueul, Okseong, Doge).
This ordinance was enacted to reflect the reality that the risk of safety accidents during agricultural work is increasing due to an aging population and the expansion of agricultural mechanization. It aims to prevent agricultural work safety accidents and to enable systematic support in the event of an accident.
The main contents include: ▲ the purpose and definitions of terms (Articles 1 and 2), ▲ establishment and implementation of a plan for the prevention of agricultural work safety accidents (Article 5), ▲ support for prevention projects and education (Articles 6 and 7), and ▲ establishment of a cooperative system with related organizations (Article 11).
Councilor Shin Yongha stated, "As agriculture enters a super-aged society, the risk of accidents during agricultural work is rapidly increasing. I proposed this ordinance to protect the lives and ensure the safety of elderly agricultural workers, and to establish practical, field-oriented measures for accident prevention."
Meanwhile, Gumi City plans to use the enactment of this ordinance as an opportunity to strengthen the safety management system at agricultural sites and to actively promote various support policies to protect the lives and property of agricultural workers.
