Pyeongtaek City in Gyeonggi Province has finalized approximately 60,000 pyeong in the Eunsan 1-ri area of Jinwi-myeon as the site for the construction of a comprehensive funeral facility, following two rounds of public recruitment.

On May 20, Mayor Jung Jangsun of Pyeongtaek announced in an online briefing, "We have finally selected Eunsan 1-ri, Jinwi-myeon as the site for the construction of a public comprehensive funeral facility equipped with a crematorium and other amenities."

The confirmation of the site for the comprehensive funeral facility comes one year and three months after the project was launched in February last year. In the first round of public recruitment in September last year, two locations applied, but both were rejected. In the second round, held in September of the same year, three locations, including Eunsan 1-ri, applied. The city selected Eunsan 1-ri as a preliminary candidate site, and after conducting a site feasibility study and on-site inspections, the "Public Comprehensive Funeral Facility Construction Promotion Committee" gave a positive opinion on May 16, leading to the final confirmation of the site.

Mayor Jung explained the selection background, stating, "The proposed area is located deep inside the hilly region of Taebongsan, yet it is also close to the Gyeongbu Expressway, Dongbu Expressway, and Local Road 317, making it highly rated for both screening and accessibility."

However, the originally planned site size of 65,000 pyeong has been slightly reduced to around 60,000 pyeong. This decision was made because the city decided to exclude the southern forest area from the project site, reflecting concerns from local residents about potential forest damage.

With the exclusion of the southern forest area from the project site, the city plans to create community convenience facilities, such as a leisure sports park, separately after consulting with residents and reflecting their opinions. As a result, of the total 60,000 pyeong, approximately 20,000 pyeong will be developed for funeral facilities such as the crematorium, while the remaining 40,000 pyeong will be used for community convenience facilities.

With the site now confirmed, the city will begin preliminary administrative procedures in the second half of this year, including basic planning, feasibility studies, local government investment reviews, and decisions on urban planning facilities. From 2027, the city plans to proceed with basic and detailed design services, implementation plan approvals, and land compensation, aiming to begin construction in 2029. The target completion date for the funeral facility is 2030.

Mayor Jung stated, "The decision on the project site is only the first step," adding, "We will make every effort to incorporate as many diverse opinions from citizens as possible to provide the optimal funeral facility."

Meanwhile, neighboring cities Anseong and Osan have also expressed their intention to participate in the construction of Pyeongtaek City’s comprehensive funeral facility. The city plans to soon form a consultative body with these local governments to discuss specific cooperation measures.
