Hobum Kim of GIST Receives 'Young Scientist Award' at International Academic Conference

Hobum Kim of GIST Receives 'Young Scientist Award' at International Academic Conference Hobum Kim, Professor, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, GIST.

The Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) announced on May 13 that Hobum Kim, Professor of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, recently received the Young Scientist Award at "PIERS 2025 (Photonics and Electromagnetics Research Symposium)" held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

The PIERS Young Scientist Award is presented to scientists under the age of 40 who have demonstrated outstanding potential and research achievements in the fields of electromagnetics and photonics. Recipients are selected through a rigorous evaluation process open to researchers worldwide. Awardees are recognized for their high potential to become leading core researchers in these fields in the future.

Professor Kim was recognized for his original and innovative development of defect control technology for perovskite, a next-generation optoelectronic semiconductor material, significantly increasing the commercial viability of high-efficiency and highly stable optoelectronic devices. This technology has high potential for application in various optoelectronic fields, including solar cells, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and photodetectors.

Meanwhile, PIERS is a globally renowned international academic conference in the field of electromagnetics theory and applications. Since 1989, it has been held annually by The Electromagnetics Academy (TEA).

PIERS is hosted in major cities across the United States, Europe, and Asia, serving as a venue for sharing the latest research results in various fields such as optics, photonics engineering, electromagnetic theory, metamaterials, and nano-optics. The conference acts as a platform for knowledge exchange and global collaboration among researchers and is regarded as a prestigious academic event attended by leading scholars in related fields.
