This marks the first time a local government in Korea has received the award for two consecutive years, following last year's recognition for the Yangjaecheon Ecological Stream Restoration Project. With this fourth win, Seocho-gu has become the most awarded local government in Korea. The award ceremony was held on the 12th in Auckland, New Zealand local time.
The Green World Awards is an international environmental award that recognizes outstanding eco-friendly policies and programs implemented by public institutions, companies, and organizations worldwide. This year's winner, the Bangbaesup Environmental Library, is an eco-friendly public library located in Seoripul Neighborhood Park. By actively adopting sustainable systems such as a solar power generation system, a zero-waste cafe, and a tumbler washer, the library has achieved an annual reduction of 23,179 kg of greenhouse gases and the equivalent effect of planting 3,458 trees.
Under the symbol of "Kkaeal Nest," the library operates a variety of environmental education programs and resource circulation projects. Since its opening, it has welcomed approximately 270,000 visitors, establishing itself as a hub for environmental action in the local community.
With this award, the Bangbaesup Environmental Library has also been included in the Green Book, a global collection of exemplary environmental cases. At the ceremony, The Green Organisation described it as "an excellent example of creating a sustainable future together with citizens while coexisting with nature in an urban setting."
Seocho-gu Mayor Jeon Seongsoo stated, "Through this award, the Bangbaesup Environmental Library has been internationally recognized as a sustainable model that practices eco-friendly values together with the local community. We will continue to pursue eco-friendly policies with even greater responsibility so that 'eco-life' practices become more widespread in everyday life."
