Buyeo County Mushroom Industry Research Institute
Promoting On-Site Technical Support and R&D
for Stable Production and Quality Improvement
Buyeo County in South Chungcheong Province is actively expanding its research and development efforts, as well as on-site support, to strengthen the competitiveness of the mushroom industry.
On May 8, Buyeo County announced that it is promoting various technology development initiatives and support for local farms, centered around the Buyeo County Mushroom Industry Research Institute, to ensure stable mushroom production and improve quality.
Since its opening in November 2021, the research institute has conducted major research on technologies related to button mushrooms and shiitake mushrooms, providing practical assistance to the local agricultural sector.
The county is a leading production area, accounting for 57% of the nation's button mushroom output and 9% of shiitake mushroom production, and ranked first in national production as of last year.
The research institute has accumulated achievements such as the selection and application of casing soil substitutes, disease control technologies for button mushrooms, and studies on production characteristics according to substrate materials. Based on these results, the institute is steadily expanding its tailored on-site technical support.
This year, in cooperation with the Chungnam Agricultural Research and Extension Services, the institute plans to launch a study on the development of an ICT-based smart farm growth model to improve button mushroom productivity.
In addition, the institute will simultaneously pursue research on optimal substrate composition and stabilization technologies for button mushrooms, as well as increasing vitamin D content in shiitake mushrooms using ultraviolet B (UV-B) irradiation.
Kim Daehwan, Director of the Buyeo County Agricultural Technology Center, stated, "The Buyeo County Mushroom Industry Research Institute is focusing on developing practical technologies that farmers can directly benefit from," and added, "We will continue research and technical support tailored to local conditions to foster a sustainable mushroom industry."
