Daejeon City Implements Comprehensive Measures to Respond to Algae Spread in Daecheongho

Daejeon City Implements Comprehensive Measures to Respond to Algae Spread in Daecheongho

The Daejeon Waterworks Headquarters announced that it will launch comprehensive management measures this year to proactively respond to the spread of algae in the Daecheongho water source.

The Waterworks Headquarters expects that, due to the geographical characteristics of Daecheongho, as well as summer heatwaves and heavy rainfall, algae proliferation will become active around August. Accordingly, the headquarters plans to activate an emergency response system.

The main response measures include weekly monitoring of algae concentration; strengthening the operation of environmental infrastructure such as algae barriers and artificial wetlands; operating 50 underwater aeration facilities to prevent the spread of pollution; and running an emergency algae response team.

In addition, efforts to expand the foundation for algae response will proceed in parallel. The Waterworks Headquarters also plans to construct two additional underwater aeration facilities, maintain environmental infrastructure, and conduct water quality monitoring using vessels.

In the Chudong area, which serves as the water source for Daejeon citizens, three algae alerts were issued between August and November last year. However, by operating underwater aeration facilities and algae barriers, the environmental infrastructure was activated in advance to prevent algae outbreaks.

Park Dohyun, head of the Daejeon Waterworks Headquarters, stated, "To provide the best tap water that Daejeon citizens can drink with confidence, we will strengthen algae response and water quality management throughout the entire process, from the water source to the purification plant."
