Boryeong City Selected for New Automotive Infrastructure Development Project

On May 7, the city of Boryeong in South Chungcheong Province announced that its project, "Establishment of an Advanced Safety Platform for xEV Energy Storage Systems," had been selected as the final candidate in the "2025 New Infrastructure Development Project for the Automotive Sector," organized by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

This project will be implemented through 2027 with a total budget of 24.3 billion KRW, of which 14.3 billion KRW will come from national and provincial government funds. South Chungcheong Province and Boryeong City will participate in the project, and the Korea Automotive Technology Institute will serve as the implementing agency.

The main components of the project include the establishment of a safety assessment center for xEV energy storage systems, evaluation of domestic impact tests, technology development, and support for commercialization. The core focus is on the demonstration and assessment of battery safety.

The city is building five eco-friendly mobility clusters in the Gwanchang Industrial Complex: a virtual demonstration center for eco-friendly vessels, a test and evaluation center, a support center for electrified vehicle tuning, a high-performance electrification center, and an industrialization center for the reuse of batteries from electric vehicles.

Mayor Kim Dongil stated, "In the era of fossil fuels, Boryeong played a pivotal role in supplying energy to Korea with more than 80 coal mines and the Boryeong Thermal Power Plant. Now, in line with the trends of the times, we have successfully transitioned to a carbon-neutral city. In the future, with the establishment of an eco-friendly mobility industry base and the clustering of renewable energy industries, Boryeong will be reborn as the heart of Korea's carbon neutrality."
