Mungyeong City Launches "Four Major Cultural Movements" to Overcome Low Birthrate

Promoting Population Policy at the 27th Tea Bowl Festival
Achieving a 16% Increase in Births

Mungyeong City in Gyeongbuk Province is accelerating the implementation of its population policy by intensifying the "Four Major Cultural Movements" aimed at overcoming the low birthrate issue.

Mungyeong City Launches "Four Major Cultural Movements" to Overcome Low Birthrate Mungyeong City, Gyeongbuk Province, is promoting the "Mungyeong 4 Major Cultural Movements for Overcoming Low Birthrate and Happiness for Both Me and My Child."

On May 3, at the venue of the 27th Tea Bowl Festival, the city conducted a promotional campaign under the theme "Overcoming the Burden of Low Birthrate, Happiness for Both Me and My Child in Mungyeong," to inform citizens about its population growth initiatives and the Four Major Cultural Movements.

This campaign was organized to reduce burdens throughout the life cycle?including marriage, childbirth, childrearing, and work-life?and to encourage a shift in perceptions regarding the low birthrate.

In particular, the "Four Major Cultural Movements," which advocate for reforming conventional regulations, reflect the city's strategy to enhance the effectiveness of its population policy through practical actions in citizens' daily lives.

The Four Major Cultural Movements consist of: ▲ Promoting "small weddings" to reduce financial burdens (affordable weddings); ▲ Recognizing diverse family forms, including non-marital childbirth (happy childbirth); ▲ Creating a culture that treats parental leave as "parenting work" (joyful parenting); and ▲ Achieving work-life balance based on gender equality (free work-life balance).

During the event, the city distributed leaflets about its population policy and provided explanations to citizens to increase understanding of the policies, while also encouraging on-site participation to foster a culture of action.

Jeon Mikyung, Director of Policy Planning for Mungyeong City, stated, "In 2024, the number of births increased by 33 compared to the previous year, marking a 16% rise. Building on this achievement, we will promote policies to overcome the low birthrate in a way that citizens can truly experience, and through the Four Major Cultural Movements, we will pave the way for change together with our citizens."

Mungyeong City plans to continue accelerating efforts to become a "city where it is easy to have and raise children" through citizen-centered population policies and practical measures to reduce burdens.
