Samsung Wins SID "Display of the Year" Award... LG Showcases Automotive Displays

Display Featuring OCF Technology
Seventh Award Following 2023
LG Also Showcases Technologies at SID

Samsung Display will receive the "Display of the Year" award from the Society for Information Display (SID). LG Display also plans to participate in SID 2025 this year to showcase its automotive display technologies.

Samsung Display announced this on May 6. The Display of the Year award is given by SID to the best display product released during the year. The award ceremony will take place during "Display Week," which opens on May 11 in San Jose, United States.

SID shared the news in its journal, stating, "Samsung Display's 'LEADTM' is an OCF (On-Cell Touch Sensor Film) technology that replaces the traditional polarizer, an opaque plastic sheet. This innovation improves brightness, enhances outdoor visibility, and makes the panel 20% thinner."

LEADTM is the world's first polarizer-free OCF technology, developed by Samsung Display in 2021. By removing the polarizer, which was essential in conventional OLED panels, and integrating the function to block external light reflection, the technology increases brightness while reducing power consumption.

Additionally, eliminating the polarizer allows for thinner and lighter panels, making it ideal for flexible and slim designs. It was first applied to foldable smartphones and has recently expanded to bar-type smartphones, further demonstrating its technological value.

Samsung Display is actively marketing its proprietary technology under the 'LEADTM' brand, which encompasses four key features: low power consumption, eco-friendliness, high brightness, and thinness.

A Samsung Display representative stated, "LEADTM is an innovative technology that overcomes the structural limitations of OLED, delivering not only enhanced performance but also eco-friendliness. We expect its low power and high brightness characteristics to be applied across a wide range of products, including smartphones and IT devices, where these features are increasingly important."

Samsung Display previously won the Display of the Year award for its 5.68-inch flexible OLED in 2014, foldable displays in 2020 and 2022, and QD-OLED (Quantum Dot-OLED) in 2023. This marks the company's seventh time receiving the award.

LG Display will also participate in "SID 2025," which will be held for three days starting May 13 (local time) at the McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, United States. Under the theme of "Business Expansion through New Technologies," LG Display plans to unveil automotive displays optimized for future mobility.

In particular, as in-vehicle infotainment systems become more important, LG Display will introduce a variety of solutions in terms of form factor, size, and image quality to match the trend of larger and more diverse automotive displays. The company will present its automotive stretchable display solution, which can turn every space inside a vehicle into a display, suggesting the potential for design innovation in future mobility. The stretchable display, which can expand by up to 50% while maintaining high resolution of 100 ppi (pixels per inch) and full RGB color, is applied to vehicle interiors.

Traditionally, the vehicle's center fascia required separate displays and lower buttons. With the stretchable display, the screen can expand freely, seamlessly connecting the display and buttons into a single surface. When touched, the previously flat screen flexibly stretches, and touch-type buttons protrude, making operation convenient even while driving.

LG Display will also showcase various innovations, including the "pillar-to-pillar" product optimized for Software Defined Vehicles (SDV) and the "slidable OLED," which can be rolled up and hidden in the vehicle's ceiling.

Having recently achieved the world's first commercialization of a 40-inch pillar-to-pillar display, LG Display will exhibit a 57-inch automotive pillar-to-pillar display, the largest single-panel solution globally. This ultra-large display spans the dashboard from the driver's seat to the passenger seat, allowing users to view driving information, climate control, and other vehicle data at a glance, while also enjoying movies, games, and other content in high definition.

In line with the trend toward larger automotive displays, LG Display will also introduce SPM (Switchable Privacy Mode), a key technology for enhancing safety by controlling viewing angles. As the first in the industry to commercialize this technology, LG Display enables passengers to watch movies or play games on the display in front of the passenger seat, while the driver cannot see the screen, supporting safe driving.

Since commercializing the world's first tandem (multi-layer structure) OLED-based automotive OLED in 2019, LG Display has built a full lineup of world-class automotive displays, including P (Plastic)-OLED ATO (Advanced Thin OLED) and high-end LTPS (Low Temperature Polycrystalline Silicon) LCD.

Park Geuksang, head of LG Display's Auto Business Group, stated, "At SID 2025, we will continue to introduce new technologies that create differentiated customer value, further solidifying our position as the global leader in automotive displays."
