Jinwook Jung Appointed Executive Secretary to the Chief Campaign Chair
Sunsook Im Named Head of the Spouse Office
As the Democratic Party of Korea enters full-scale election mode, the couple Jinwook Jung, a National Assembly member representing Gwangju Dongnam-gap, and lawyer Sunsook Im, who are both active in Gwangju, have attracted attention by being included together in the list of the newly launched election campaign committee.
On April 30, the Democratic Party held an inauguration ceremony for the "Real Korea Election Committee" at the main conference hall of the National Assembly Members’ Office Building and announced the appointment of 22 central campaign committee chairs, including seven chief campaign chairs and 15 co-campaign chairs.
Eunkyung Chung, a former head of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency under the Moon Jae-in administration and a native of the Honam region, was appointed as chief campaign chair, while lawmaker Jiwan Park (representing Haenam, Wando, and Jindo in South Jeolla Province) was named co-campaign chair, both taking the lead in supporting candidate Jaemyung Lee. All 18 National Assembly members from Gwangju and South Jeolla were also included in the committee.
The Democratic Party also appointed members to a total of 15 candidate-affiliated committees, including the National Grand Unity Committee, as well as organizations directly under candidate Jaemyung Lee. Among those from the Honam region, the couple Jinwook Jung and lawyer Sunsook Im were both named, drawing particular attention.
Jinwook Jung serves concurrently as executive secretary in the office of the permanent chief campaign chair and as deputy head of the parliamentary campaign headquarters, while his wife, lawyer Sunsook Im, was appointed head of the Spouse Office. Jung is known for his long-standing political relationship with candidate Jaemyung Lee as a core supporter.
With Chandae Park, the floor leader, taking on the role of permanent chief campaign chair, Jinwook Jung will be at the forefront of the presidential campaign as executive secretary. He will also continue his role as deputy head of the parliamentary campaign headquarters.
As head of the Spouse Office, lawyer Sunsook Im will oversee the messages and schedule of candidate Lee’s wife, Hyekyung Kim, and will join her husband Jinwook Jung on the campaign trail. The Spouse Office is led by Im and includes Chief of Staff Eunho Jung and Executive Secretary Seungah Baek.
Sunsook Im’s appointment as head of the Spouse Office is believed to be based on several factors: her background in progressive civic activism, her identity as a woman from the Honam region, her high standing in the local community, and her experience as a former member of the Democratic Party’s Supreme Council.
After graduating from the law school at Chonnam National University, Sunsook Im became the first woman from a university in the Honam region to pass the national bar exam. She also served as the first female president of a local bar association in Gwangju and as head of the Gwangju branch of Lawyers for a Democratic Society.
