Concluding His Role as Acting President
at the Final Security-Related Ministers Meeting
Handoksoo, Acting President and Prime Minister, stated on May 1, "The government should always put the national interest first in responding to new international orders, including negotiations with the United States, and approach these matters calmly and seriously under the principle that 'there is no compromise when it comes to national security.'"
At the Security-Related Ministers Meeting held at the Government Complex Seoul that day, Acting President Han said, "The domestic and international security situation surrounding our country is extremely grave," and made these remarks.
He expressed concern, saying, "North Korea has officially acknowledged the dispatch of troops to Russia for the first time, accelerating its close relationship with Russia. It is also upgrading its weapons systems targeting us and plotting new provocations. Our government, businesses, and citizens continue to be exposed to the threat of cyberattacks."
He went on to say, "At times like this, it is all the more important to maintain a thorough state of readiness and prepare for new threats so that there is not even the slightest gap in protecting the lives and property of our people." He also emphasized, "Morale in the military is a key factor that determines the outcome of war. I ask that you make special efforts to improve the treatment and morale of our service members."
Acting President Han stated, "Such efforts will be decisive for our safety and victory in the event of an emergency, should one arise. Strong security is the foundation of our nation and the pillar that supports our economy." He added, "Diplomatic and security-related ministries must unite with a sense of ownership and responsibility, and take care of matters with the sole focus on the nation and its people."
Meanwhile, this Security-Related Ministers Meeting marks Acting President Han's last official duty as acting president. He is expected to resign as prime minister later in the afternoon to run for the presidential election.
