The police have launched a full-scale investigation into the SK Telecom USIM information hacking incident.
On April 30, the Cyber Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced that it had upgraded the SK Telecom USIM information hacking case from a preliminary inquiry to a formal investigation.
The police have expanded the dedicated investigation team to a total of 22 members, led by the head of the Cyber Investigation Division at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency. The team will secure digital evidence related to the hacking incident and will investigate the circumstances and background of the hacking, including the infiltration of malicious code, through cooperation with both domestic and international partners.
Previously, the police had launched a preliminary inquiry after receiving a report of hacking damage from SK Telecom. On April 19, SK Telecom announced that information, including USIM data, had been leaked due to a malicious code attack by hackers.
A police official stated, "Given the high level of public interest and concern, we plan to conduct a systematic and intensive investigation led by cybercrime specialists."
