Free and Anonymous HIV Testing Available for Everyone
Amid a recent surge in the incidence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) both domestically and internationally, Paju City in Gyeonggi Province has urged residents to actively utilize the STI testing and vaccination services that are available year-round.
According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency on April 28, the number of syphilis patients in South Korea in 2024 is 2,733, which is approximately 1.5 times higher than the 1,753 cases reported in 2019. This upward trend is also being observed in neighboring countries such as Japan and Taiwan.

Most STIs are either asymptomatic or have mild symptoms, so many people are unaware of their infection. However, if left untreated, STIs can cause serious complications. If a pregnant woman is infected, the disease can be transmitted to the fetus, leading to congenital infection or fetal death. Therefore, thorough prevention and vigilance are essential, and prompt treatment is crucial in the event of an outbreak.
The Paju Public Health Center offers STI testing (for syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and HIV?with free anonymous testing available), as well as free pre-marital screening for engaged couples, to protect the health of citizens. In addition, girls aged 12 to 17 and women from low-income backgrounds aged 18 to 26 are eligible for free HPV vaccinations at designated medical institutions nationwide.
The recent spread of STIs is being led by people in their 20s and 30s. In particular, syphilis infections among those in their 20s and 30s are especially notable. Experts cite changes in sexual culture, such as an increase in sexual contact with multiple or unspecified partners, as a major cause. Syphilis can be treated relatively easily with antibiotics if detected early, but if not treated in a timely manner, it can remain in the body for decades and cause various complications.
Gonorrhea and chlamydia infections are major causes of pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility in women. Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection can cause cervical cancer as well as other types of cancer. Infections such as genital herpes, gonorrhea, and syphilis also increase the risk of acquiring HIV (commonly known as AIDS).
To prevent STIs, it is most important to practice safe sex. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends using condoms correctly, limiting the number of sexual partners, and getting tested for STIs if symptoms appear or if there has been any suspicious activity. In particular, if infection is suspected, it is advisable to get tested immediately and to abstain from sexual activity.
