Gyeonggi Education Office to Establish Special Schools in Goyang, Namyangju, and Pocheon by 2028

All five proposals for new schools submitted by the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education to the Ministry of Education's Central Investment Review were approved on April 24. Notably, the newly approved schools include three special schools in Goyang, Namyangju, and Pocheon.

The approved locations for new schools are as follows: special schools in the Changneung District of Goyang and the Wangsuk District of Namyangju; a special school utilizing the site of a closed school in Pocheon; a standalone kindergarten in the Galmae Station area of Guri; and a public alternative school in Ansan to support students from migrant backgrounds.

The Changneung District in Goyang and the Wangsuk District in Namyangju are both undergoing development as part of the third phase of new town projects. The establishment of special schools in these areas aims to proactively address the anticipated increase in demand for special education due to large-scale population inflows.

Goyang Special School No. 1 will have 32 classes and accommodate 203 students, while Wangsuk Special School will have 30 classes and accommodate 186 students. Both schools are scheduled to open in September 2028.

In Pocheon, where there is currently no special school, the site of the former Yeongjung Elementary School, which closed in 2022, will be repurposed for a new special school. This school will have 28 classes and accommodate 172 students, with a target opening date of September 2028.

The standalone kindergarten in the Galmae Station area of Guri and the public alternative school in Ansan for students from migrant backgrounds also passed the Central Investment Review.

The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education expects that the approval of these proposals will help expand educational opportunities for students eligible for special education not only in the three regions but also in neighboring areas, and will alleviate issues related to long-distance commuting.

Lim Taehee, Superintendent of the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education, stated, "This marks the opening of fair educational opportunities where not a single special student is left behind, allowing each individual to receive education according to their circumstances."
