Transported Collapsed Elderly Man to Hospital... Man in His 60s Referred for Hit-and-Run Charges

A man in his 60s who transported an elderly man who had collapsed on the street to the hospital has been referred to the prosecution on charges of hit-and-run.

Gwangju Bukbu Police Station announced on the 24th that they have forwarded Mr. A, a man in his 60s, without detention on charges of causing death by fleeing the scene under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes.

Mr. A is accused of fatally striking Mr. B, a man in his 80s, with his vehicle on a road in front of an apartment complex in Munheung-dong, Buk-gu, Gwangju, on the morning of February 11. Immediately after the accident, Mr. A transported Mr. B to the hospital in his own vehicle, but Mr. B died five days later.

The bereaved family filed a complaint, stating that the death was "caused by a traffic accident," prompting the police to launch an investigation. Although the closed-circuit (CC) TV footage from the scene was blurry due to heavy snowfall at the time, police explained that they confirmed the moment Mr. A's vehicle collided with Mr. B. There was no black box in Mr. A's vehicle.

During the police investigation, Mr. A reportedly denied the charges, stating, "I did not cause the accident" and "I only transported the elderly man, whom I found collapsed on the street, to the hospital to help him."
