The Yeongsangang River Basin Environmental Office will provide technical support starting next month to local governments experiencing difficulties in operating public sewage treatment facilities.

On April 23, the Yeongsangang River Basin Environmental Office announced that it had increased treatment efficiency by completing an additional 53 basic environmental sewage facilities, 24 more than last year. The office also explained that it had expanded technical support for facilities that exceeded effluent water quality standards due to aging sewage pipelines and seasonal water quality changes, reducing the number of exceedances by 46.5% compared to the previous year.

The sewerage supply rate in South Jeolla Province stands at 84.3%, which is below the national average of 95.4%. The environmental office plans to increase the budget for basic environmental facilities, such as expanding sewage treatment plants and improving pipelines, by more than 40% next year compared to this year, in order to raise the supply rate.

The technical support team, composed of the Korea Environment Corporation and private experts, will visit sites to assess facility operations and propose customized improvement measures. In particular, starting this year, the team will check the implementation of facility-specific measures on a quarterly basis, and for facilities that require complete renovation, the possibility of government funding will also be considered.

Commissioner Kim Youngwoo stated, "We will strengthen field-oriented technical support to preserve the water quality of public water bodies."
