Vote Percentages and Rankings Remain Undisclosed
Second-Round Primary to Proceed with Media Day on April 23
On April 22, the People Power Party announced that former Minister of Employment and Labor Kim Moonsoo, lawmaker Ahn Cheolsoo, former party leader Han Donghoon, and former Daegu Mayor Hong Joonpyo (listed in alphabetical order) have advanced to the second round of the primary.
Hwang Woo-yeo, chairperson of the People Power Party's Election Management Committee, announced at the National Assembly at around 5:45 p.m. on the same day that Kim Moonsoo, Ahn Cheolsoo, Han Donghoon, and Hong Joonpyo were selected as the four candidates advancing to the second round.
The first round of the primary was conducted through a public opinion poll targeting the general public, held over two days from the previous day to the day of the announcement. Five polling agencies each surveyed 800 people, for a total sample of 4,000 respondents, and the average of the results was calculated. To prevent supporters of other parties from participating, a clause to prevent strategic voting was applied to all opinion polls conducted during the primary process.
The party's election committee opened and counted the ballots for the first round in the presence of representatives from each candidate immediately before the announcement. However, the vote percentages and rankings from the first round were not disclosed.
Chairperson Hwang warned, "If anyone subsequently spreads unverified rankings or figures and disrupts the party primary, the election committee will hold them strictly accountable to the end, as I declare here today."
The People Power Party will hold a second-round primary media day on April 23 and determine the matchups for the one-on-one debates scheduled for April 24 and 25. A four-way debate will be held on April 26.
The second-round voting (50% public opinion poll, 50% party member vote) will take place on April 27 and 28. The results will be announced on April 29. If a single candidate secures a majority, that candidate will become the final presidential nominee.
However, if no candidate receives a majority, the top two candidates will compete in a third round. The third round will include a one-on-one debate on April 30, followed by a public opinion poll (50%) and a party member vote (50%) on May 1 and 2. The final candidate will be announced on May 3.
