On April 22, Kim Wonyi, a member of the National Assembly from Mokpo representing the Democratic Party of Korea, expressed his congratulations and welcome regarding the designation of the offshore wind power project in Sinan, South Jeolla Province, as a renewable energy cluster by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
A renewable energy cluster is a designated area where local governments take the lead in site selection and promote renewable energy projects by securing public acceptance through public-private councils involving local residents, fishermen, and local authorities. South Jeolla Province plans to establish a total of 10 offshore wind power clusters with a combined capacity of 3.2GW in the waters of Sinan County by 2033.
Since entering the 21st National Assembly, Kim Wonyi has continuously devoted efforts to legislative activities for offshore wind power development. In particular, during the process of designating the Sinan offshore wind power project as a cluster, he has actively communicated with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, emphasizing the need for concentrated government support to foster the southwestern region of South Jeolla, centered on Mokpo, as a hub for offshore wind power.
Furthermore, following the passage of the "Special Act on the Promotion of Offshore Wind Power Deployment," which Kim proposed in February, the designation of the Sinan offshore wind power project as a cluster today marks another significant achievement in succession.
Kim Wonyi stated, "The Sinan offshore wind power cluster in South Jeolla is a large-scale offshore wind project with a capacity equivalent to more than two nuclear power plants," adding, "This designation as a cluster has laid an important foundation for Mokpo to leap forward as the hub of offshore wind power in Korea."
He continued, "This achievement was made possible thanks to the support and encouragement of Mokpo citizens," and added, "I sincerely thank Governor Kim Yungrok of South Jeolla Province and all the provincial officials for their dedicated efforts toward this meaningful accomplishment."
He emphasized, "I will continue to do my utmost in legislative activities to discover sustainable future growth engines for the development of South Jeolla and Mokpo, as well as to promote balanced national development and revitalize the local economy."
