The Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority announced on April 22 that it plans to install smart crosswalks at 28 locations, including intersections in Yeongjong and Cheongna International Cities, by the first half of this year. By region, 13 locations are in Yeongjong and 15 are in Cheongna, with a total budget of approximately 300 million won allocated for the project.
Smart crosswalks are traffic safety auxiliary devices that enhance pedestrian safety using advanced information and communication technology (ICT). They are primarily installed at accident-prone locations and areas with high pedestrian density.
The system includes LED pedestrian signals embedded in the crosswalk surface, a voice guidance system, a red remaining time indicator on the signal that displays the remaining time using numbers and symbols, and an automatic extension system that provides an additional 5 to 10 seconds of crossing time if a pedestrian is unable to complete crossing.

Since 2020, the Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority has been promoting the smart crosswalk project, installing 81 auxiliary devices at 38 locations?19 in Yeongjong and 19 in Cheongna?by last year. The project targeted areas with frequent pedestrian traffic and a high incidence of crossing accidents on roads with four or more lanes in both directions. All elementary school zones within the Incheon Free Economic Zone have been equipped with these devices and are currently in operation.
An official from the Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority stated, "We will continue to install smart crosswalks to establish a smart road traffic infrastructure," adding, "In particular, we will strive to guarantee the transportation rights of vulnerable groups such as the elderly and children."
