Gwanak-gu Designated as First Regional Environmental Education Center to Advance as Environmental Education City

Gwanak-gu (District Mayor Park Jun-hee) has designated the 'Seoul Gwanak-gu Environmental Education Center,' the first environmental education center in Gwanak-gu, to accelerate its leap toward becoming an environmental education city in pursuit of carbon neutrality and a sustainable urban transition.

The center is entrusted to be operated by the Korea Environmental Education Association, which was designated through a public contest review, and began full-scale activities from March as a hub for regionally tailored environmental education.

It plans to carry out various projects such as operating lifecycle-based education programs, training social environmental education instructors, and establishing an environmental information platform, serving as a comprehensive environmental education hub to enable residents to experience and practice carbon neutrality in their daily lives.

On April 7, the '1st Steering Committee Meeting' was held, where various education and welfare experts including ▲district office officials ▲Dongjak-Gwanak Office of Education ▲social welfare organizations ▲elementary and secondary school teachers participated to discuss the major business plans for 2025 and the direction of local environmental education.

In particular, starting this year, the center will actively promote the 'Carbon Neutral Youth Influencer Training Education' for teenagers, aiming to nurture the next generation of green leaders based on participatory education that integrates environment and media with a practice-oriented approach.

Additionally, the center plans to systematize the foundation of environmental education and actively promote various projects such as ▲operating an environmental education counseling call center ▲establishing an online information exchange platform ▲opening instructor training courses.

The district expects that the designation of this environmental education center will become another central axis of environmental policy alongside last year's urban carbon sink project, the 'Starlight Rain Ecological Stream Restoration.'

Park Jun-hee, Mayor of Gwanak-gu, said, "The designation of this center is the first step in institutionalizing the environmental learning rights of residents and realizing 'Gwanak-style environmental education' that reflects the characteristics and resources of the region," adding, "We will do our best to create a sustainable Gwanak-gu where environmental education and green infrastructure harmonize."
