Setting the Direction for Gyeongnam Manufacturing Innovation
Through Generative AI Technology
Gyeongnam University, which is emerging as a hub for digital innovation in Gyeongnam with its super-scale manufacturing AI, participated in 'Google Cloud Next 25 (Google Cloud Next 2025)' held in Las Vegas, USA, from the 9th to the 11th.
This event brings together Google Cloud and leading technology companies and research institutes from around the world to share the latest technologies and practical application cases in digital innovation, artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, and smart manufacturing, as well as to present future visions.
At the event, Google Cloud introduced its integrated AI technologies with three core themes: AI-optimized platforms, open multi-cloud, and interoperability. These included AI infrastructure, the Gemini model, Vertex AI, and AI agents. Notably, Google's first inference-only 7th generation Tensor Processing Unit (TPU), 'Ironwood', was also unveiled.
In addition, Samsung Electronics introduced a new home robot, 'Ballie', equipped with generative AI technology in collaboration with Google Cloud, while LG AI Research shared its own LLM model 'EXAONE' and enterprise agent AI implementation cases using Google Cloud's AI hypercomputer. These and other examples showcased the latest technologies and practical applications.
Researchers from the Super-scale Manufacturing AI Global Research Center and the Gyeongnam Intelligence Innovation Project Group at Gyeongnam University, who attended the event, were able to check the future vision, technology development direction, and progress in digital innovation, artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, and smart manufacturing from domestic and international companies and research institutes. This provided an opportunity to take another leap forward in the fields of manufacturing AI and manufacturing innovation.
Furthermore, Gyeongnam University confirmed that the development directions for the 'manufacturing process-based ontology' and knowledge graph being built using the globally recognized AAS (Asset Administration Shell), as well as the 'manufacturing-specialized LLM (Large Language Model) technology' utilizing these, are being pursued in various ways worldwide. This reaffirmed the university's leading role in setting global standards for manufacturing AI.
Choi Hyungwoo, Director of the Super-scale Manufacturing AI Global Research Center, said, "Since the center is currently carrying out the 'Development and Demonstration Project for Super-scale Manufacturing AI Service Technology Specialized for the Manufacturing Industry,' supported by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Korea Industrial Complex Corporation, Gyeongsangnam-do, and Changwon City, I believe that combining the latest technologies confirmed at this event with Gyeongnam University's manufacturing AI research capabilities will greatly enhance the global competitiveness of Korea's manufacturing sector, especially in key industries in the Gyeongnam region such as machinery, shipbuilding, and auto parts manufacturing."
Yoo Namhyun, Director of the Gyeongnam Intelligence Innovation Project Group, added, "As our group is responsible for the regional intelligence innovation talent development project promoted by the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Institute for Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation, Gyeongsangnam-do, and Changwon City, we plan to develop and operate specialized programs for current employees by combining the latest technologies with Gyeongnam University's practical competency training. We will also link business support programs that can solve technology challenges faced by local companies through super-scale manufacturing AI technologies with the Gyeongnam University RISE Project Group."
Meanwhile, in March, Gyeongnam University integrated its previously dispersed Super-scale Manufacturing AI Global Research Center and Gyeongnam Intelligence Innovation Project Group into the 2nd and 3rd floors of Hanma Hall. Together with the newly established AI-SW Convergence Graduate School this year, the university is fostering R&D in super-scale manufacturing AI and nurturing innovative talent in manufacturing AI.
