On the 10th (local time), a helicopter crashed into the Hudson River in New York, USA, resulting in the deaths of all six passengers, including a family of Spanish tourists.
According to the Associated Press, New York City Mayor Eric Adams stated, "The flight began around 3 PM from a city heliport, and the deceased, including three children, have been recovered." The flight reportedly lasted less than 18 minutes.
A witness testified that the helicopter "shattered into pieces" in midair. The tail and propeller detached, and the propeller was still spinning during the crash. A New Jersey resident said, "It sounded like several gunshots in quick succession in the air," adding, "The helicopter shattered and plunged into the river."
The passengers included one pilot, three adults, and three children. According to ABC News citing sources, five of the passengers, excluding the pilot, were a family of tourists from Spain. The Associated Press explained that the skies over Manhattan, New York, are filled with private hobby, commercial, and sightseeing airplanes and helicopters.
In 2009, a plane and a sightseeing helicopter collided over the Hudson River, killing nine people, and in 2018, a charter helicopter crashed into the East River, resulting in five passenger deaths.
