Jung Jinwook, the lawmaker who proposed the debate (Gwangju Dongnam-gap), said, "Just as the Manmin Gongdonghoe held in Seoul in 1898 called for national independence and sovereignty, today's Gwangju Manmin Gongdonghoe will mark a new turning point for the Republic of Korea based on the Gwangju Spirit in the aftermath of the Yoon Sukyeol rebellion," adding, "I hope Gwangju can play a key role in the upcoming presidential election."
