The Korea Semiconductor Industry Association urged the National Assembly to promptly pass the Special Act on Semiconductor Industry Support. In a statement released on the 9th, the association emphasized that since semiconductors are a strategic asset driving the sustainable growth of the national economy, active cooperation between the government and the National Assembly is urgently needed.
The association stressed, "South Korea's semiconductor industry is at a critical turning point where it can no longer take its past global competitive advantage for granted." In the memory sector, although a super-gap was once maintained, competition has intensified recently due to technological advancements by major countries such as China and the United States.
In particular, the spread of protectionism surrounding AI semiconductors, supply chain restructuring, and the imposition of reciprocal tariffs by the U.S. have increased uncertainties in the trade environment, which is expected to have direct and indirect impacts on the export competitiveness of domestic companies.
The association stated, "To respond to external uncertainties, we have no choice but to enhance our own competitiveness," adding, "While we have closely cooperated with the government to establish a policy foundation for corporate support, comprehensive and systematic support at the national level has now become even more important."
The Special Act on Semiconductor Industry Support is expected to include provisions on infrastructure construction, promotion of advanced research and development, and stabilization of the supply chain for materials, parts, and equipment. The association emphasized that the bill must be discussed promptly for the domestic semiconductor industry to take another leap forward.
The association added, "We request continuous cooperation from the National Assembly and the government, and the industry will actively cooperate as well."
