The Ministry of the Interior and Safety Establishes the Fair Election Support Situation Room
The date for the 21st presidential election has been set for June 3.
On the 8th, the government decided on this election date through a Cabinet meeting and also designated the election day as a temporary public holiday to enable citizens to participate in voting.
According to Article 68 of the Constitution and Article 35 of the Public Official Election Act, elections due to a presidential vacancy must be held within 60 days from the date the reason for the election is confirmed.
The government set Tuesday, June 3, which is the 60th day from the date of the presidential vacancy, as the election day, considering the necessary period to fully guarantee the people's right to vote and to prepare the election without any issues.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety will establish the 'Fair Election Support Situation Room' to support fair election management. It plans to maintain an emergency duty system until the election day.
Ko Gi-dong, Acting Minister of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, stated, "Since this election, which is proceeding urgently due to the presidential vacancy, is of particularly high public interest, we will do our best to support it by pooling the capabilities of related ministries and local governments to ensure a fair and transparent election more than ever."
