Urban Landscape Enhancement, Energy Savings, and Revitalization of Nowon's Main Commercial District: Three Benefits in One
Up to 3 Million KRW Support per Business... Creating a Fresh Street by Improving Old and Illegal Signboards
Nowon-gu (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it will carry out a signboard improvement project in the Nowon Cultural Street area.
Nowon Cultural Street is a representative bustling commercial district formed around Nowon Station on Subway Lines 4 and 7 and a large department store. The district expects to revitalize the commercial area by improving the urban landscape, which has been cluttered with illegal and old signboards, making it a street people want to visit more often.
The project target area is a 178m section on the east-west side of Cultural Street (from Gongdaesaeng Beer to Pungmiyeon). The district has identified approximately 414 signboards in need of removal or replacement within this section. These include 171 wall-mounted signboards that do not comply with regulations, 51 protruding signboards, and 12 pole-type signboards.
Along with the 124m north-south section (from Gaeseonmun to the main signboard section), which was completed earlier this year after starting last year, most of the main commercial areas concentrated in Cultural Street are covered, so the district official explained that the effect on landscape improvement will be significant.
The main contents of the landscape improvement include ▲ removal of illegal and old signboards ▲ support for signboard design, production, and installation ▲ support for one wall-mounted signboard per business (two at corner points) ▲ improvement of window advertisements ▲ facade maintenance of old buildings, and other landscape improvement initiatives.
The district plans to remove illegal and visually disruptive elements through this project, which will be carried out until the end of this year. Newly installed signboards will use energy-saving LED materials to reduce light pollution and save energy, contributing to the realization of carbon neutrality values.
The project involves 75 stores. Each business will receive support of up to 3 million KRW, and they will form a Signboard Improvement Residents’ Committee to promote the project through voluntary participation led by residents. On the 4th, the residents’ committee and the district signed an agreement to ensure smooth project implementation and pledged mutual cooperation.
Previously, the district designated this area as a pilot zone for advertisement and other maintenance and announced regulations on display methods. After collecting residents’ consent forms and going through design creation and review processes, the production and installation of new outdoor advertisements are scheduled to begin in August.
In addition to Nowon Cultural Street, the district has been steadily carrying out signboard maintenance and landscape improvement projects in commercial areas and local attractions. Last year, the signboard improvement project supported the replacement of 153 old signboards around Gongneung Station, and a light-themed street was created and operated along the Gyeongchun Line Forest Trail area.
Mayor Oh Seung-rok said, “We are improving the aesthetics throughout Nowon-gu to create a pleasant environment and enhance the city’s brand image,” adding, “I hope that Cultural Street, the central commercial district of Nowon, will regain vitality with fresh and stylish signboards.”
