On June 5-6 at the Daehangno Arts Theater Grand Hall
The performing arts group Aham Art Project will present the new ballet "Bernarda Alba" on the 5th and 6th at the Daehangno Arts Theater Grand Hall in Jongno-gu, Seoul.
"Bernarda Alba" is based on the play "The House of Bernarda Alba," completed in 1936 by Spanish playwright Federico Garc?a Lorca. The original play is well known in Korea through the licensed musical "Bernarda Alba," which premiered domestically in 2018.
The original play depicts the story of a widow raising five daughters in a rural village in 1930s Spain. The protagonist Alba, after the death of her second husband Antonio, sets an eight-year mourning period according to family tradition and strictly controls her daughters with rigid rules. However, cracks appear within Alba's household due to Pepe, the fianc? of the eldest daughter Angustias, revealing conflicts between Alba and her daughters.
The ballet Bernarda Alba is composed of 10 scenes that explore the themes of enforced "silence" and "struggles for freedom," blending ballet, Korean dance, contemporary dance, and other genres into a contemporary movement vocabulary.
Aham Art Project is a group that presents popular art combining various genres based on ballet. Ham Doyoon, the representative of Aham Art Project, is responsible for choreography and directing this performance.
Professor Kim Soon-jung of Sungshin Women's University, who has been on stage for over 50 years since the 1970s, appears as Bernarda Alba. Kim Min-su, Kim Chae-won, Choi Jeong-in, Park Mi-joo, and Joo Ye-jin play the five daughters. The roles of the maids are performed by male dancers including Heo Seo-myeong, Yong-gi, Seo Bo-kwon, Jeong Jung-woong, Kim Pyeong-hwa, and Ham Doyoon from the National Ballet Company. These maids also represent Bernarda Alba's inner self. Among them, Heo Seo-myeong plays Pepe, the lover of the eldest daughter Angustias; Yong-gi plays Alba's second husband Antonio; and Seo Bo-kwon also plays Alba's mother Josefa. Additionally, the role of the maid and housekeeper Poncia is played by Lim Tae-woong, leader and vocalist of Dullabam, who was nominated for Best Global Contemporary Album at the 22nd Korean Popular Music Awards, and will express the atmosphere and story of the scenes through song.
Tickets can be reserved on the Arko·Daehangno Arts Theater website. Detailed information about the performance is available on the Aham Art Project website.
