A female employee in her 30s at an agency was arrested and handed over to the prosecution for withdrawing money from the bank account and even taking out loans using the mobile phone of a nonagenarian whose phone she was repairing.

On the 30th, the Gunpo Police Station in Gyeonggi Province announced that Ms. A was arrested and sent to prosecution on charges including computer fraud. Ms. A is accused of taking out loans under the name of Ms. B (90, female), who had entrusted her phone for repair, and withdrawing money from her bank account, causing approximately 200 million won in damages.

It was found that Ms. A committed the crime by installing financial applications on Ms. B’s mobile phone. To avoid detection, Ms. A received loan notification letters by mail at her own residence. She also made welfare calls to Ms. B and visited her home to check whether the victim was aware of the crime.

The crime was uncovered when Ms. B’s child discovered that the bank account had no balance while checking their mother’s bankbook. Investigations revealed that Ms. A used the stolen funds for overseas travel and luxury purchases.
